Nothing has gone wrong with your account. Since 21 May 2025 every Great Britain-licensed casino has to cap online slot spins at £2 for players aged 18 to 24. Everyone 25 and over gets £5. Here is the rule, the dates and the bits it does not touch.
What the rule actually says
The cap comes from a piece of secondary legislation with a very unglamorous name: the Gambling Act 2005 (Operating Licence Conditions) (Amendment) Regulations 2025. It does not fine players and it does not sit in any casino's own terms. It bolts a new condition onto every remote casino operating licence issued by the Gambling Commission, and any operator that wants to keep serving Great Britain has to build the cap into its slot lobby.
The wording is about the stake per spin, not about how much you can hold in your wallet, how much you can deposit or how long you can play. A single press of the spin button on an online slot cannot cost more than £5 if you are 25 or over, and cannot cost more than £2 if you are between 18 and 24. That is the whole mechanic. The two limits did not arrive together. Operators were given a six-week gap so the age-based tier could be built and tested after the flat cap was already live.
April 2019 — the land-based precedent
Fixed-odds betting terminals in betting shops were cut from £100 to £2 a spin. Online slots were left alone, and the gap between the two channels became the main argument for the change that followed.
February 2025 — the regulations are made
The statutory instrument is laid and the Gambling Commission publishes implementation guidance for licensees, including how age tiering has to work at the moment of the spin.
9 April 2025 — £5 cap goes live
Every online slot at a GB-licensed casino drops to a maximum £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over. High-stake tables and bet levels above £5 disappear from slot interfaces overnight.
21 May 2025 — £2 cap for 18-24s goes live
The younger-adult tier takes effect. From this date the spin button reads the verified date of birth on the account and refuses anything over £2 for anyone under 25.
Today — steady state
Both tiers are ordinary licence conditions now rather than a transition. Nothing further has been scheduled for slot stakes, though the wider reform programme is still moving.

What the cap does not cover

Why is my stake limited to £2?

Can I raise the limit if I can afford more?
